European Wasps/ BeesWasps and Bees

Problems: risk of stinging
Active times: Spring
Tell tales: large amounts of bees or wasps around property

European wasps are more aggressive than native variants and when a nest is disturbed can swarm on the attacker. Wasps do not have a barb in their sting like bees and can therefore sting repeatedly. Wasp stings have several toxins which many people are hyper-sensitive to and can have severe allergic reactions. Bees are not as aggressive as wasps but can still cause problems with stinging. They create hives in tree hollows or naturally occurring voids. Bees have a barb in their sting which means a single bee can only sting once. People can also have strong reactions to bee stings in the same way as wasps. The best way to deal with wasps is to kill off the nest, using pesticides, and remove it. Bees can be controlled with pesticides.

Spiders are defined as a pest due to their bite and release of dangerous toxins into the body. Spiders are found both inside and outside of the house. Not all spiders are deadly or debilitating but, most can at least give a painful bite. It is therefore recommended to give these creatures some healthy respect.

You are likely to see House Mice and Norway Rats in and around your property, you are more likely to hear Roof Rats as they tend to live in the roof and wall span

Problems: noise nuisance
Active times: nocturnal
Tell tales: foraging noises

Possums are a native marsupial. They are well adapted to living in residential areas and will take advantage of loose tiles or sheeting to gain access to roof spaces for shelter. They can be a nuisance with foraging noises. Possums are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and can only be trapped by a licensed pest controller. They can only be trapped if they have entered the house and cannot be handled in any way if they are just nesting or foraging in your garden. The only way to keep possums out of your house is to make sure that all access points are secured after removal.
