Termites are known to be a very destructive pest which require immediate action if located. Per year these pests can cause extensive amounts of damage and can also bring hefty repair costs in South Australia.
What do termites (also known as white ants) look like?
Termites appear to have long narrow shaped soft body & are creamy colour in the body but can have a darker head. Different species of termite can have slight differences in appearance but all can create damage!
In South Australia we have three common types of Subterranean termites, these being Coptotermes species, Heterotermes & Nasutitermes.
At certain times of the year, Alates (swarmers) can also be found. Alates are a flying termite which are known to drop their wings to start the mating process. Alates fly in certain weather conditions, that being warm temperatures, sunlight & low winds. The appearance of an Alate is different to the appearance of a wingless termite. There unique known features are wings longer than the body and the body colour to be a darker brown/grey colour.
Subterranean termites need contact with soil to survive underground, which is why there first signs of attack can be mud leads. They use these leads to gain access to particular food sources whilst still protecting the colony. Termites feed on softwood substances and are highly attracted to moisture.
